【Nic先生の英語ブログを読もう!】What's a birthday to you?!

Hey there everyone!

It’s March, and if you’ll forgive me, I want to ‘toot my own horn’ in this month’s blog.

‘toot one’s own horn’とは?

By the way, have you ever heard that old-fashioned phrasing: ‘toot one’s own horn’?

It’s a classic old phrasing to describe ‘showing off’ or ‘boasting’ slightly. Of course, it’s normally a bad thing to ‘boast’ or ‘show off’.

However, since the phrase ‘toot one’s own horn’ is a humorous one, it emphasises boasting in a way that isn’t impressive or that good. So, it’s a modest and friendly way to boast!

Anyway, why am I tooting my own horn this month? Well, March just so happens to be my birthday month! So, you can understand if I’m just a bit happier than normal this month!

誕生日について

I used to care a lot about my age, and I wonder if any of you have felt the same way.

I’ve actually read some interesting math-based reviews of aging. When you’re young, say turning 2 years old, that equates to half of your life!

So, birthdays when you’re young are a pretty big deal! However, the older you get, the less each year matters. One year later is only a few percentage points of your life.

それぞれの誕生日の捉え方

I’m not sure exactly when I stopped really caring about my age.

That being said, I might be a bit different, or at least my family might be a bit different, because we never ‘put much stock’, or put much importance, on birthdays. I think my mom always enjoyed her birthday, but certainly, my dad didn’t care that much!

You can contrast that with my partner and her family. Like me, I don’t think they really care about the specific number: age is just a number, after all!

However, my partner and her family truly love birthdays and celebrating. That is just one of the many reasons we are together. She shows me something new, and brings me a new perspective on things as routine as birthdays!

But, I digress! This year, I admit that I’m not looking forward to my birthday!

If I could have anything for my birthday, it would be for everyone to stop asking me ‘what do you want to do for your birthday?’ or ‘What do you want for your birthday?’

Honestly, I don’t need or want anything. However, I truly appreciate anything and everything that people do to celebrate my birth!

As long as it’s with family and friends, I’ll be happy!

How about you all? How will you celebrate your birthday? Do you do anything special?

Thanks for reading, and I hope you got something out of this birthday investigation!
