今回は、以前頂戴した質問で
面白いものがあったのでご紹介します。
「東京都など“〇〇区”のこの“区”は
どのように表現するのか。
cityなのか、それともwardなのか。
自治体のホームページではcityとなっているが、
どうなのか？」
という主旨のものでした。
あなたはどう思われますか？
結論から言うと、どちらでも表現可能です。
以下、弊社ネイティブ講師からの回答が
非常に分かりやすく説明されていますので
今回ちょっとご紹介します。
Tokyo’s designation is not city,
but metropolis, and has the same level
as a prefecture does. Tokyo was a city until 1943.
The 23-wards were upgraded to city-like status,
but in Japanese their designation of -ku,
which is normally translated as ward, remains.
They’re called cities in English for clarity,
because that is what they are in terms of governing.
Wards in Osaka are only “ku”,
wards in Tokyo are “tokubetsuku”, special wards,
and they are the only administrative divisions
in the country with that status.
There are very slight differences
between Cities (市) and Special wards (特別区).
Special wards are cities and are considered as such,
with some specific restrictions about a few services
(water distribution, firefighting, etc.) that can not
be handled independently.
Where “ward” ends and “city” begins relies on
the English definitions of “ward” and “city”
– which will vary from person to person.
