Hi guys!
This is Beth to say HI and give a few hints on how to use the two short but confusing words:
“until” and “by”!
These words have been brought up before(maybe more than once), but a lot of Japanese people seem to still be confused about how to use them correctly! Let me give you some quick pointers! Ready?
“Until” or “till” …NOT a deadline!
With this word, something is being done or not being done!
For example:
*”He worked until five o’clock!” 5時まで仕事をしました。
***He did something until a certain time. Maybe he finished everything, or maybe he didn’t. All we know is that he stopped at 5:00!
*”I won’t go shopping till the rain stops!” 雨が上がるまでは買い物に行きません。
***This person won’t go until another something happens(rain stops)! We have no idea when this will be!
“By…” is a deadline!
This word tells us something was or will be finished!
For example:
*”She finished her report by five o’clock!” 5時までにレポートを完成させました
***This one actually tells us something was finished! Notice the Japanese uses ...までに!。
* “I must be at work by 8:00!” 8時までに出社しないといけません。
***We have a limit! If we arrive after this time, we are late to work!
You try…..! チャレンジしよう。。。!
⒈ 子供たちが帰って来るまで昼寝をします。
⒉ 明日までに返事が必要です。
Did you get the correct answers?
Possible answers are:
1. I’m going to nap till the kids get home!
2. A reply is needed by tomorrow!

I am fluent in both English and Japanese, but with age (hahaha) am finding myself sometimes digging for words in both languages !! I love anything that is not housework!! Teaching (helping others learn) is my favorite activity!?! I hope to make many new friends !! Feel free to drop me a “howdy!
座右の銘は、”God first! People next! Everything else after that!”
