Schedule

Even though the camp is only a few days long, they are action packed. We have a variety of activities, and they are all focused on improving your English.

Over the 3 days, you'll have lots of opportunities to chat with Nic-sensei and learn with a native English speaker. In addition, you'll be able to practice English communication with your other classmates. Of course, all while enjoying the beauty of Tanegashima!

Predeparture preparation! (2 months before you arrive)

There are a few things that you need to bring with you before coming. Remember, a more detailed list can be found in the ‘before you go’ section. Here are the most important though ( in my opinion ;) )!

  • Send one interesting fact about yourself to Nic-sensei. Difficult to guess!
  • Bring something for show and tell
  • Bring your survival English handbook!
  • A positive attitude!

Day 1

Afternoon Arrival - You’ll arrive around lunch. So, we’ll have some food and drink ready for you, because what’s better than eating and drinking? English practice will start right away, but don’t worry, we will be starting off slow, and this will be your first opportunity to learn. This boot camp is all about immersion in English, so all of your materials will be in English. I’ll have English translations of all the menu, so you will be reading and making your food order with one of your teachers, all in English!

Once you’re ‘fed and watered’ as we say in English (ask me about the meaning of this phrase during the camp!), it’s time to check into your accommodation. And, that means it’s another chance to practice some practical English. The check-in procedure will be done in English! As a reminder, there will always be Japanese staff on hand if you need to clarify everything!

The goal of the camp is to learn English and have fun, so don’t worry. We will always give you the information you need in Japanese as well if it’s really important!

After the check-in procedure is finished, we’ll have a few activities to get to know each other, and for you to learn more about Nic-sensei. These will be fun, and designed so that everyone can practice English and meet their fellow campers!

These activities will be done outside, weather and light permitting.

After our activities, it will be time for a big welcome party! After all of our learning and travelling to the island, I’m sure you will be hungry! But, you will have to use your English once more. Use English when ordering and getting to know your fellow campers. Even if you’re shy, don’t worry! You will have lots of chances to use English in a low-stress environment. Don’t worry, Nic-sensei is a bit shy too, but he has some fun activities to lighten the mood.

The party will end with show and tell, and then it’s off to bed, to rest up for an action-packed day 2!

Day 2

Since weather is so variable on Yakushima, this camp is designed to be very flexible. So, the itineraries for Day 2 and Day 3 are interchangeable. We have one day of outdoor activities, and one day of indoor activities. So, we will have our ‘outdoor day’ on either Day 2 or Day 3, depending on which day has better weather.

Outdoor day will actually see you as the teacher!

Yakushima is a World Heritage Site renowned for its nature. And, I’ve heard it was the inspiration for many a Ghibli movie. So, you will be teaching me about the world of Ghibli, as we go for a walk in the park. You and your fellow students will need to retell a Ghibli movie, while we’re there. It will be like visiting Ghibli Park, but even better because it will be in English!

During the day, we will either have lunches prepared for you by a local restaurant, or we will visit a local restaurant for an authentic meal. Either way, you know there will be English involved!

After a long day in the forest, our nighttime activities will be more relaxed! We will have a few activities to focus our learning though, so don’t worry.

Day 3

Remember that Day 2 and Day 3 are interchangeable. But, one of them will be an ‘outdoor day’ as mentioned above. For our ‘indoor day’, don’t worry, because there are still lots of chances to have fun.

Even though we are ‘indoors’, our accommodation has plenty of space to move and learn, so we will have a range of activities to stay busy and learn English. In fact, you can even call it our ‘competition’ day. Campers will be put on a team with a teacher, and together, you will work on a series of challenges. The winning team will get a prize, but everyone will learn English!

To finish the day, we will have a fun cooking lesson with Lisa! This was a huge hit during our first Tanegashima Boot Camp, so we are bringing it back to Yakushima. Don’t worry if you don’t have much cooking experience either, like me. Lisa is a pro, and we will be cooking some German and Canadian favourites!

Day 4

It’s time to say goodbye, but that’s not something to be sad about! We will make your final day special, with some early morning activities and review lessons before your departure.

You will also give a short presentation to your fellow campers as a final project. Don’t worry though. You will be amazed. After 4 days of English, the presentation will be no problem with your new English skills!

Of course, we will have an extra special breakfast as well!

Don’t forget that there are review lessons online after the camp, and more opportunities to learn again at the next Boot Camp. Return survivors are always welcome and rewarded!

Time Schedule

Day 1

  • Greeting at airport or port, sorting baggage, transportation to accommodation.

  • Arrival at accommodation and time for food!

    • Your English journey starts with a quick lesson ordering food at a restaurant. We will try our best to make all meals an English immersion experience.
    • So, you will be ordering from one of your teachers, and conducting all the events in English.
    • You will even go through the payment process in English. Of course, you will pay ahead of time for most things, but for practice, you can also practice asking for the cheque. This is another point to chat about with Nic!
  • Check in!

    • After lunch, it’s time to get everyone settled into the camp. This will also be done in English, and it will be a good time to practice common phrases when checking into a hotel.
    • You will learn some ‘house rules’ for the hotel, and get a map showing where everything is! We have prepared a great hotel in nature, so you will love it.
  • Orientation meeting

    • After an amazing lunch, and getting everything sorted in your room, it’s time to start the camp. Everyone will come back to the main room and get some information from your teachers.
      • Of course, our Japanese support staff will be there just in case there are any questions.
    • You will receive some material to use throughout the course, like a Yakushima Boot Camp Guidebook and Boot Camp Diary.
    • We will also give you a quick summary of the rest of the camp.
  • Icebreaker games, and getting to know each other!

    • We’ve got a ton of interesting activities that I’m sure you will love. Some of these are successful activities that Tanegashima Boot Camp survivors really enjoyed!
    • For example, we will do our ‘secret question’ bingo, where everyone walks around and learns a different fact about their fellow camper.
    • In addition, we’ve got some other fun activities that we can only do on Yakushima, at our amazing venue!
  • Sunset scavenger hunt

    • This is our first of 3 ‘survival scavenger hunts’. These are fun ways to practice your casual English in different situations.
    • These scavenger hunts are all about communication. You will have to ask your fellow students and your teachers to find all the clues.
  • Welcome feast

    • Just like all meals, this is a role play. Your teachers play the role of server and restaurant managers.
    • Be a good customer, and be sure to tip highly ;). We will have a little discussion about ‘tip culture’ during the meal, and talk about everyone’s expectations for the camp.
  • Show and tell and diary writing

    • Our last activity of the day is a favourite of our English Boot Camps: Show and Tell.
    • Every student brings something to the camp, or tells a story to share something about themselves.
    • Some students have brought pictures of their pets, or their families, while other students showed off their English study skills.
    • Or, they brought something to show their favourite hobby or pastime. It can be anything, just have fun with this activity!
    • The day will finish with some quiet writing time to finish your Yakushima Boot Camp diary. You will get more information about this during the camp. However, the most important point of learning is setting goals, and working towards them. So, your Boot Camp Diary is a great study tool, and your teacher will correct it to help with your English writing as well!

Day 2

  • Breakfast time.

    • Make sure to fuel up for the day. Depending on the weather, we have 2 different itineraries, and a host of activities to do! Practice your English during breakfast. It might be early, but I love coffee, so I’ll be awake!
    • There is a ‘North Route’ and a ‘South Route’, depending on the weather. Here’s a look at our ‘South Route’, where we explore central Yakushima, and the Southern Coast!
  • Leave for the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center

    • The Yakushima Conservation Center has put together an exhibition to show off Yakushima Island and its ecosystems. It will give us a deeper understanding and background knowledge of the island. Luckily, the exhibition is also displayed in English so we can learn two things at the same time.
    • You will also get a worksheet before the lesson, to help guide your learning at the museum.
    • Of course, your teachers will be around to help out with specific vocabulary questions and translations during the exhibition. We will also be able to watch a short movie as part of the exhibition.
  • Visit Yakusugi Land

    • Yakushima is world famous for its natural wonders. So, what better way to explore the island, (and work off our delicious welcome feast!) than by going on a hike.
    • Yakusugi Land offers hiking trails through typical dense forest featuring wooden boardwalks and bridges. The trails are often wet due to the typical moist climate on Yakushima so please make sure to bring Hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes and a rain jacket.
    • If you’re worried about keeping up, don’t worry!! There will be different trails for all abilities and we will allow for enough time for everyone to explore nature. We will have several groups depending on your hiking level, so you can enjoy the forest, and more importantly, learn English, at your own pace.
  • Visit Kigensugi cedar

    • One of the oldest trees in Japan, and probably the most famous tree in Japan. This is one of the symbols of Yakushima, and worth a drive and visit. It’s a short jump away from Yakusugi Land too, and a nice visit before lunch.
  • Traditional local lunch

    • The saying ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’ applies to Yakushima!
    • Here, you can say, ‘When in Yakushima, eat as they do’, so we’re going to have some local specialities.
    • I’m sure I don’t have to tell you about the local flying fish, which is amazing! But, we will have a few other surprises at our stop for lunch. We will stop at one of the most well-loved restaurants on the island.
  • We’re on our way to the other side of the island!

    • After our hike and lunch in the morning, we will have a more relaxing afternoon. We have a variety of stops to enjoy, with lots of English in between.
    • We will be very flexible, depending on what everyone would like to do. Here are a few options:
    • There are only 2 waterfalls in Japan that flow directly into the ocean, and guess what? They’re both on Yakushima. Their names are Ohko waterfall and Torokino waterfall. They’re both easy to get to for us, so we will visit one, or both, depending on everyone’s mood!
  • Shrine-hopping

    • There are a variety of small shrines to visit on the way to our final destination on our ‘southern trip’. You’ve probably visited many shrines, but have you visited with an English speaker?
    • Visiting shrines and temples is a great way to learn new vocabulary and phrasing to explain Japanese culture. We have some practice activities to do at a few shrines and temples along the way.
    • The first will be益救神社!
  • drive to Ohko waterfall ? snack

    • This will be the first (or 2nd!) waterfall of the day, so bring your camera!
    • Depending on the time, we might have a small local snack to boost your energy for the final location of the day!
  • Observation deck scavenger hunt

    • After the waterfalls, we will visit the observation deck 10 minutes further from the waterfalls along the coastal road.
    • We will have a great view over the ocean and down the cliffs.
    • If we’re lucky, we might even encounter some Yakushima macaque and Yakushima deer who linger around the roads on this part of Yakushima.
    • In addition, there will be our second ‘survival scavenger hunt’ to practice your English before driving back.
  • Drive back to hotel

    • It’s a bit of a long drive around the island, but we will spend it talking about our day. You can use this time to think about your diary, and make small talk with your teachers and students about everything you enjoyed!
  • Dinner

    • You deserve a big dinner after that long day! But, you have to use English to get it, of course!
    • Role play again, and this time, you will get some ‘surprise’ situations to deal with ‘emergencies’ at the restaurant!
  • Campfire and diary writing and review

    • Time for some quiet time after dinner. You will get time to sit around outside around the fire!
    • This will be a relaxed time to make small talk, review your diary, and maybe do a bit of stargazing! There are lots of different situations to practice English.

Day 3

  • Lets start the day by having a healthy breakfast together at our hotel. We can chat and spend time together leisurely while preparing for the day. Don’t forget, you will be ordering from Nic!

  • We start at another shrine!

    • This one is quite close to the hotel, so don’t worry about a long drive.
    • Shrines are great places to learn, and this time, it’s a Shinto Shrine: 牛床詣所.
  • Departure for Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park

    • Banyan trees are truly unique, and this little park has a variety of short paths that take in some ancient banyan trees.
    • You will go into smaller groups and prepare a short presentation about your time in the park!
  • It’s beach time!

    • We are headed to Isso Beach, voted the best beach in Kagoshima Prefecture.
    • The sandy beaches of Yakushima are famous for being turtle nesting grounds. Maybe we will be lucky and get a few views of sea turtles in the ocean. This coast of Yakushima offers several famous diving sites as well, where divers can see many different kinds of coral and fish.
    • At the beach, we will have our 3rd ‘survival scavenger’ hunt, so I hope you’re excited! This will be the ultimate challenge, where you will use everything you have learned so far!
  • Lets have lunch together!

    • Your teachers will have prepared a lovely little picnic bento lunch, so you can eat outside and enjoy the picnic lifestyle.
    • Picnics are famous in Canada, so share your own traditions for eating outside. What are some common picnic foods?
  • Yakushima lighthouse!

    • There are so many interesting tales about lighthouses, and students really enjoyed their time at Tanegashima Lighthouse, so it’s time to visit Yakushima’s version.
  • Head back towards the city for a shopping trip

    • Shopping is a great tradition. We will partner with a local souvenir shop to have a fun shopping activity, and a chance to buy some real souvenirs of your trip (along with the ones you will receive in the camp)! Personally, I suggest the flying fish だし!
  • Arrival at hotel

    • After arriving back from our trip of northern Yakushima, have a break in your room, and get ready for the next activity!
  • Lets cook together

    • After shopping, you’re well prepared for this favourite Boot Camp activity.
    • That’s right, it’s your turn to be the chef. Don’t worry about your cooking skills. If you’re like Nic, and sometimes even burn water when you try and cook, you will still be fine.
    • We will split everyone into groups, with a ‘professional’ teacher as a guide, and a recipe to follow.
    • You will have to go shopping and buy your ingredients… From your boot camp host! This is a good time to practice ‘haggling’, or the art of negotiating a good price when shopping!
  • Eat what you cook!

    • So, how did your cooking go? Well, it depends on your English skills. Of course, your recipes for this activity will be in English, so if you follow the English recipes, you will be successful!
  • Preparation for final presentations

    • We try and have fun during these camps, so the final night will have 2 parts.
    • First, we will have a ‘sing along’ with Nic, and his guitar. If you’re lucky, your other Boot Camp participants and teachers will bring their own instruments, and we can try and play as a whole band!
    • English songs are a great way to learn!
    • After singing, you will have some time to prepare your final presentation, to give after breakfast before departure tomorrow.

Day 4

  • A special farewell breakfast!

    • I’m sure we can find something special to eat for breakfast. Maybe some leftovers from yesterday’s cooking activity ;)!
  • Packing time!

    • Everyone will get time to pack and get ready for their trip. Depending on everyone’s departure method (plane/ferry), you might be leaving at different times.
  • Check out

    • Just like ‘check in’, you’re still practicing English, even on the last day!
    • Your teachers will check you out of the hotel, ask you questions about your stay, and you will have to complete an ‘English survey’.
  • Final presentations and award ceremony

    • Students will give their final presentations about their stay. This will be explained more fully at the camp!
    • Throughout the camp, there will be lots of little challenges. Each student will be given ‘badges’ or ‘medals’ to show they completed all the challenges.
    • In addition, we will have some special awards for students, like ‘Most improved’ or ‘Best attitude’!
  • Leaving time

    • There will be free time after the award ceremony, so feel free to enjoy your time at the hotel, and most importantly, chat with your teachers before you leave!

After the camp!

You still have more opportunities to use English. There will be ‘wrap up’ online parties to see each other again, as well as individual meetings with your teachers to review, so don’t worry. After you leave, the fun and learning doesn’t stop!
